Patreon idea is nonsense

  • the solution to this nonsense idea is simple: DO NOT GIVE ANYTHING AWAY. What is wrong with sales? when the finished product is for sale then you decide whether to buy it or not .  as simple as that.

    sell and prosper.

  • well the truth is that I have read the patreon pitch in full to realize the idea is dumber than what I expected. sorry nobody is going to pay $ 20 USD for something that will be free next week. the forum is lost if this is the new form of sponsor.

Do not give out free lunches.

  • Thanks for your input Walter & Sean. I see the idea isn't well understood yet. Hopefully the "gist" of it gets to be self-evident as our weekly releases grow.

Crowdfunding is huge & proven outside gambling. We can be supported by a relatively small group of fans in relation to the whole community we serve. We're merely adding ourselves to an established infrastructure, the Patreon model isn't new.

Please re-read our page's specifications. Do feel free to ask.

Practical example: we're currently aiming at honoring pending requests + at least one Blue_Angel method during this very week.

Paying Patrons can download the resulting program as soon as it's complete.

At the end of the week, Patrons get to choose which release to gift the community for week #41, 2017.

    (Binding Patron-only poll).

The model isn't hard to understand:

    1) Works are developed continuously.
    2) Paying patrons can download immediately.
    3) A single release is chosen by patrons to be gifted to the public domain every week.

Do feel free to ask for clarification. This Patreon model is already in place and yes, it's our new way to sponsor around.

    Cheers!

  • sorry, still a nonsense. this forum is going to turn 5 and the impression it gives me is that it is broke financially because of the stubbornness in trying to give away when everyone knows that sales are what makes the world go round.

my suggestion: collect all programs into a massive file to be sold using a paypal button like a traditional sale and the forum will do better.

  • I still have the impression our new Patreon model isn't understood yet.

Labeling it straight, it's "sale-supported public domain creation".

Chances are this sponsorship model produces more than one release per week; as only one of them is given away for the week, the rest ends up being part of a "cache" which must be paid to access (i.e. bought).

The innovative part of our Patreon model is the ability to integrate "gamification" (binding poll = winner of the week) & the ability to sell partials/incomplete works to generate more sponsorship toward their actual completion.

I'm perfectly fine with dedicating my work to the public domain, the barrier has been procuring a steady payment for the actual hours required to create the public domain works themselves. Chances are with the assistance of a modest fan base (in relation to users) this model solves it.

When looking at the the big picture, I'm not aiming at growing rich with this scheme. Just to get enough to make my public domain dedication a viable income source.

My heart beats with being a software & content creator for the benefit of the world. This isn't at odds with sustaining my family :cheer:
