Time to get rid of spammers

  • Hello dear friends, as you may have noticed some spammers are abusing our fine community by posing (initially) as regular users, getting approved, then posting their payload.

As we try to be open and transparent in our decisions just wanted to bring this issue to the spotlight for our community to brainstorm on ways to get rid of spammers, starting this very month.

We already set the forum to add "external" and "nofollow" to most links in order to take away the incentive for spammers to get search engine rank from their unwelcome activities in our pages.

First idea to ponder around: disable displaying live links for all users, then approve each of them manually i.e. make link posting a privilege/permission granted on a case-by-case basis.

What do you suggest? We aim to be an user-focused, content-oriented community for the times to come :)

  • Approval on a case-by-case basis is worth considering, as long as the workload for the admin team doesn't get out of hand !

Meanwhile -- to play the devil's advocate - do there really need to be live external links on the forum at all?

One could argue that if the forum is to be relevant-content-based, the links steer people away from the forum, and those links contribute nothing to this site's content.

[Obviously internal links are necessary for navigation and searching etc]

Perhaps someone might like to list the pros and cons of having external links on this forum in the first place.

  • I don't know how many spammers or links you are talking about, but my opinion is that links usually add value to a post.
Maybe admins can have filtered post with links and just remove those which don't add value or are just plain spam.

  • Only 50+ posts writers should be allowed to put links of their choice. Prior to this if a newbie member posts a link, it should ask for moderator's approval before being shown. Any misuse from any member should be punished suitably.

I don't think in the highest majority of the cases, that links will steer people away from the forum.  All adults and all make their own choices.  A rebel rouser or trouble-maker (like the 3 or 4 that hoover here) can find anything with anyone's threads to cause problems about.

  • It's obvious that once they click a link they are steered away from the forum. That's what links do !!

  • Well, but I frequently come back to that forum that is a good source of valuable links to sites I may be interested in.
But I agree that a minimum of 20-30 made posts is a good idea before links are allowed.

  • We're going to amend our forum rules before new year to nuke blatant "commercial promoting".

There's still the loophole of users posting a link when talking to each other, but we can live with that instead of the "Click the flashy full-page ad" post.

A step in the right direction to keep our Bet Selection forum focused on... Bet selection :)

  • BTW, thanks to a fellow caring member for reporting a "borderline" promoter who has been put in pre-moderation.

The promoter would go to content threads every once in a while to spread veiled promotions for a single website. He would mention other sites too but all of his posts have a consistent website being mentioned when viewed together.

This begs the question of what to do with such users. They aren't technically breaking forum rules but it's clear these users aren't here to discuss bet selection but to promote their payload.

Thanks for keeping a sharp eye :-*

Promoter went back to his tactic of spamming content threads = account + all of his spam gone. We are a content-oriented community with people who cares about it.

Hint: when you are warned and put into pre-moderation for spamming, don't try to spam in your very next posts.

(Well, doubt spammers even look at their inbox, bet they just go into doing it in zombie mode ::) )

  • Does Admin have way to curb robots that can create spamming accounts automatically? I believe that newbies should always be in moderation till cleared of writing useful and contributing contents. After a certain number of meaningful posts one should be made moderation free. This step can eradicate all potential spammers to dirty our valuable community. All links are not harmful. Many may guide or lead to a valuable discussion.

As a matter of fact, we do have a human verification based on actual image recognition + "prevent public post after registration" feature.

Thanks to this combination plenty of spammers are caught before they hit the public eye :)

    Indeed.

Links from our community members are not harmful per se. We are fully aware not all links come from spammers, but all spammers want to publish their link.

Our bigger concern being the human spammers, mind you. Spam robots are easier to catch since they register and shoot their payload immediately. On the other hand, human spammers can survive the most since they get to interact with the staff. We generally do take time to give human-looking posts a second chance, even sending personal messages. It has helped in the past.

Guess the corrective action would go along the lines of working with a white list of pre-approved sites.

  • We're going to amend our forum rules before new year to nuke blatant "commercial promoting".

There's a new global moderator applicant besides some technical improvement we want to make so our rules' refreshment gets to take place within January to ponder everything right. This is something important for our focused community so we don't want to rush it.

What is going to happen right in the beginning of January being the muting of known blatant spammers, until there's either a new separate forum with sections for each member to express whatever they please or they'll simply stay in pre-moderation forever if we deliberate that's the best path for our community's well-being.

We're still split on having a bigger forum with un-moderated sections for members or doubling-down on moderation here.

Personally, I'd pretty much lean to a smaller forum being quite focused and a very enjoyable peace. We're not doing this for the numbers or aiming at "becoming #1".

On the other hand, technically, I'm all-in for an expanded forum giving many more facilities and features to members. It can increase participation in new ways we won't be able to enjoy under this forum software.

We'll see; we're going to discuss this point at length at the moderators' lounge section as soon as 2017 arrives. Regardless of what we choose we're of course open to community feedback in order to adjust course. This matter is still at a very malleable stage.

    Thanks for being around!
